Freezes, his eyes widening in shock as he takes in my presence on his doorstep. I can see the recognition flicker across his face, followed by a mix of fear and guilt.
“Mr. Johnson,” I say, my voice steady despite the storm of emotions raging inside me. “Do you remember me?”
He nods slowly, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “Y-yes, of course, I remember you. You were one of my students…”
I cut him off with a bitter laugh. “That’s right, I was. The student whose life you decided to ruin.”
Mr. Johnson’s face pales, and he takes a hesitant step back. “I-I’m not sure what you’re talking about…”
“Oh, I think you know exactly what I’m talking about,” I reply, my voice cold and hard. “You were the one who called child protection on my family all those years ago, weren’t you? You’re the reason we were torn apart, why we suffered for so long.”
Mr. Johnson’s eyes dart around nervously, and I can see the guilt written all over his face. “Look, I-I had no choice,” he stammers, his voice trembling. “I was just following protocol…”
“Protocol?” I scoff. “Is that what you call it? You destroyed my family, ruined our lives, and you have the audacity to stand there and try to justify it?”
I take a step closer to him, my fists clenched at my sides. “Well, guess what, Mr. Johnson? It’s payback time. You took everything from me, but now it’s my turn to take something from you.”
With that, I turn and walk away, leaving Mr. Johnson standing on his doorstep, his face drained of color and his eyes filled with fear. As I walk down the street, a sense of satisfaction washes over me. It may have taken fifteen years, but I finally got the justice I deserved.
